The Climate Change Leadership Awards 2010 recognise, reward and celebrate South African businesses, community-based organisations or individuals who are leaders in climate change issues, and who are taking the lead through positive voluntary action by implementing a range of activities related to combating global warming. These important awards will also do much to promote awareness and action towards a low carbon economy and thus a more sustainable planet.
The winners were:
Community Sector Category:
- 1st place – Urban Farming
- 2nd Western Cape’s Soil for Life
Both these organizations support one the biggest problem facing the world today and that is Access to Food. (There were 20 nominations in this category)
Corporate Services Category: Nedbank Ltd
Retail Sector Category: Woolworths
Small and Medium Business Sector: Rocking the Daisies Music Festival
The keynote speaker at the event was Mr Kumi Naidoo, Executive Director of Greenpeace International. More recently, he served as Chair of the civil society alliance ‘Global Campaign for Climate Action’ (GCCA), of which Greenpeace was a founding member.
A key sponsor of the awards is the SA Post Office. CEO Motshoanetsi Lefoka said: ‘We believe that work to combat climate change at grassroots level should be encouraged. We are aware of the effect that business activities can have on the environment, which is why the South African Post Office itself is investing in technology and processes that limit environmental impact.’
We feel good about being in there with the people who are working to make a difference to this beautiful planet of ours. We know that our work has the power to change people, and to change their world. This award will strengthen our resolve to spread the environmental message far and wide;. The prize money will ensure that yet another group of gardeners can embark on our home gardening programme that is
proving so popular.
